BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Hallmarking is mandatory for all gold and silver jewellers in India. It certifies the purity of precious metals. Without BIS Hallmarking, jewellers cannot legally sell gold/silver jewellery. Penalties include fines of up to ₹1 lakh or imprisonment.
